Q. What do I need to do before I come pick an animal?
A. We require a completed adoption application before we schedule visits with potential adopters. Our number one concern is always the safety and security of all of the animals and volunteers at Catskill Animal Rescue. Essentially, we just want to know who you are and a little about you before you visit us.
Q. Do I need references?
A. Yes, we require at least one personal reference. We will call references as well as your current or previous veterinarian to find out if you are the perfect fit for the animal of your choice.
Q. What are your adoption fees?
A. Our dog adoption fee is $250.00 with consideration for special circumstances. For cats over six months old the fee is $75 and kittens are $125. These fees help to cover the cost of running the rescue (food, vet care, etc.) All of our animals come spayed or neutered, with up-to-date rabies and distemper vaccinations. Our dogs are micro-chipped before leaving the shelter (you would probably like to re-register your new pet with the HomeAgain microchip registry company when you get them home.) You can find information on this service here:
HomeAgain for Pet Owners
Q. Can I still adopt if I live in an apartment?
A. YES, it is possible sometimes! Keep in mind that your landlord needs to approve of your adopting an animal too. Please have your landlord let us know in writing that you are approved to have the animal/s you'd like to adopt.
Q. Where can I find the application?
A. You can find the link to our application here: CARE Adoption Application.
Q. What happens after I submit the application?
A. Once the application is approved, we will begin checking your references and then schedule a visit. If the potential adoptee likes the family, applicants will be allowed to move forward with the adoption process. Adoption selections are made on a "Best Fit" basis and not on a "first come, first served" basis.
Q. How long does the application process take? How soon can we take our new pet home?
A. Timelines vary depending on availability of personal references, landlord and veterinarian approvals; but generally we can complete an adoption process in one day (sometimes it may take two to three days.) We like to have all of our animals move into happy healthy homes as soon as possible!
